About the site

More than an object of art that we contemplate at distance or the simple product of an industry, films have the capacity to express life itself. Paradoxically, the banality of this expression fascinates us, since we are faced with our own manner of existing in the world, something neglected by us in our busy lives. The possibility offered by cinema to "live" through the look of the “other” redirects our perception towards the invisible dimensions of our reality that define who we are, how we behave, what we believe. And the world is suddenly revealed to us! The attitude of “wonder” (thaumazein, in the original Greek) that Plato sought through philosophical thinking finds, thus, in cinema its sensible expression.

Given the similarity in the manner that philosophy and cinema “look” at the world, I decided to create this site to propose a philosophical approach through which cinematographic experiences could be interpreted. Cinema is not seen here as a mere medium for the explanation of philosophy. On the contrary, I believe that there is something that films express by themselves, by their own unique way of telling us a story, and our experience of such expression depends on the sensibility of each one of us. Thus, my objective is not to evaluate the quality of a cinematographic work, I leave this task for each one of you. But different of standard film critics, I would like to analyze how specific philosophical questions are manifested through the way that form and content intertwine on each film – the philosophical content being directed to non-philosophers and being presented, therefore, in a non-academic form.    

From my side, I hope this manner of connecting philosophy and cinema allows me to share with you not only my personal perception of each film, but also a real philosophical knowledge that goes beyond superficial cliches. And who knows, maybe in this way philosophy, stripped of its pedantry, but exposed in the simplicity of its wisdom, could help us live better.
